This is the most important surviving drawing by Collinson and shows many of the characteristics of early Pre-Raphaelite draughtsmanship.

The P. R. B. Journal refers twice to Collinson's idea for the picture:

"After he shall have finished his paintings for the year, he means to set to work on the subject of Elizabeth of Hungary taking off her crown before the crucifix".

"The idea of painting for the next year the subject of Saint Elizabeth before the altar is once again strong upon him".
