Compared to 'The Annunciation', the more striking 'The Nativity' was well received, however, Ruskin finding it "quite beautiful in thought, and indicative of greater colourist's power than anything else in the room".

 

Both pictures were bought by JamesLeathart, who also owned Brown's 'The Pretty Baa-Lambs').
