The Skulls brought to the King

Dante Gabriel Rossetti

The Skulls brought to the King

Date: 1872

Materials: Stained glass

A note of grotesque humour runs through this series of six stained glass windows, especially in the depiction of the dragon. This whimsical element extends to the caption for each subject (absent from the Birmingham panels).

A similar panel in the Victoria & Albert Museum of the first subject 'The Skulls brought to the King' is titled: "How word came to the King of Egypt touching a certain dragon that ate much folk and must needs be fed with a noble damsel to stay his maw".
